Web Site Design Tips
Building a web site is more complex than you think! Here are our 3 golden rules...
(1) Content. The best websites have quality information and clearly describe their business
and products.
(2) Style. Ease of navigation, menus, links, headings, bullet points and bold text all
help readability.
(3) Web-friendly. There are lots of details. Here's a quick checklist:
- Use style sheets (CSS) for clean / minimum size HTML
- In CSS use relative font sizes so browsers can scale / zoom your page
- Check meta tags: title, keywords,
description
- Check layout on both narrow and wide screens
- Check printing
- Check links
- Check HTML is free from superfluous formatting and proprietary Microsoft tags
- Check modern browsers (e.g. IE,
FireFox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, NS) on different operating systems (e.g. Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Check pages conform to HTML 4.0 and
CSS 2
- Have important content near the top of each HTML page to help the search engines
- Have a nice error page
- Have a site icon
- Check downgrading if Javascript disabled
- Hide email addresses from spam-bots
- Guarantee consistency of headers and footers using Server Side Scripting (e.g. PHP)
- Secure pages that deal with credit cards
- Check older versions of browsers (especially IE6/7 which still have
noticable market
share)
